Mrs Merushka Hansraj is the Director of Personalised Learning at the Arbor School, tasked with ensuring that the educational provision of Arbor meets the needs of every child in the school.
Born in South Africa, Mrs Hansraj initially studied Law at the University of Durban Westville before changing course to education in 1994. She gained a UK equivalent Bachelors Degree in 1998. She relocated to the UK in 2001 and gained UK Qualified Teacher Status in 2007 followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning Difficulties and Disabilities from the University of Birmingham in 2008. Mrs Hansraj completed her National Professional Qualification for Headship via the Institute of Education, London, in December 2017.
Mrs Hansraj’s experience in education spans 20 years commencing with her first teaching role at Observatory Girls school in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1998 where she taught English, Geography and PE before taking on an English, Maths, Science and Geography teaching role at Parkhurst Primary, also in Johannesburg. After two years she relocated to Cape Town where she taught children with Moderate Learning Difficulties and Cerebral Palsy at Vista Nova School. Mrs Hansraj has taught in both mainstream and special schools in South Africa and the UK, and has been a Senior Leader in UK special schools for 8 years, initially as Assistant Headteacher, then Deputy Headteacher. Prior to accepting the role as Director of Personalised Learning at the Arbor School, Mrs Hansraj was the Deputy Headteacher at Kingsley High School, an outstanding special school in Harrow, UK. She is a trained Safeguarding and Child Protection Officer. Mrs Hansraj has a track record for leading and managing successful change in a number of schools, and has experience in innovative curriculum design and Assessment Development. As a trainer and outreach Leader, Mrs Hansraj supported and delivered training to a number of mainstream, early years and special school settings over several years, to meet the needs of children successfully.
Mrs Hansraj’s specialisation in Learning Difficulties and Disabilities provides a multi-faceted foundation of knowledge, skills and understanding of a wide spectrum of learning needs to ensure that every student at Arbor has a tailored pathway to achieve success based on their unique learning styles. Mrs Hansraj is passionately committed to ensuring that all children are given every opportunity and are challenged to achieve their best.
Mrs Hansraj and her husband have two sons aged seven and 15 years, and as a family, they enjoy travelling and spending quality time with family and friends. In her leisure time, Mrs Hansraj enjoys photography, arts and crafts and reading.
